Milk Carton Easter Chapels

Even though Mercer Mayer doesn't share the Easter story in Happy Easter Little Critter, we were tickled to discover, that the Berenstain Bears aren't the only of our familiar picture book friends heading off to church on Easter morning.

Admittedly, Little Critter's focus does seem to be more on candy and colored eggs than the cross. Still, the Critter family loads into the family car, dressed in their Sunday best, and heads off to worship, before the first jelly bean is eaten.

After church, they join with their congregation for a picnic, and egg hunt on the church lawn, with their lovely, little, white chapel in the background.

Since we hadn't turned our Robin Eggs "milk" cartons into whales yet (you can check that craft out at Adventures in Mommydom), we decided to turn them into Easter chapels, instead.

A, helped me glue the tops closed...

...and mark side windows, and doors...

...for cutting. I cut the bottom out of one to gain access to the inside, before deciding to cut an open doorway, so for the second box, I left the bottom of the box on, which worked even better.

The younger girls gave them a couple of coats of white paint...

...and prepared "stained glass" for the windows by sandwiching construction and tissue paper between small pieces of contact paper...

...that we trimmed and glued into place, along with craft stick crosses, once the paint was dry (or mostly dry).

Then, for a final touch, we added finger lights...

...to illuminate our chapels in the dark, all ready for the Good Friday service.

It's great to be a homeschooler.

This is so lovely. My husband made a very pretty church for our winter village display, now I am contemplating decorating it for Easter :)

The stained glass windows are very pretty when the church is lit from inside.
